Issue/Introduction

  • After upgrading ESXi, a critical alarm appeared stating, "Unable to apply DRS resource settings on host. . This can significantly reduce the effectiveness of DRS."
  • In the ESXi - /var/run/log/hostd.log you may see the following:
    <Timestamp> verbose hostd[2122679] [Originator@6876 sub=Vmsvc.vm:/vmfs/volumes/VOLUME_UUID/VM_NAME/VM_NAME.vmx opID=OPID user=vpxuser] Preparing resource pool update

    <Timestamp> info hostd[2123840] [Originator@6876 sub=Solo.Vmomi opID=OPID user=vpxuser] Throw vim.fault.DuplicateName

Environment

  • vCenter 7.x
  • vCenter 8.x

Cause

An inaccessible virtual machine in the vCenter inventory can cause this alert.

Resolution

Unregistering the invalid virtual machine from the ESXi host clears the error.
