"Permission to perform this operation was denied" error when trying to log into ESXi Host UI with AD credentials

Issue/Introduction

 

  • Following error is observed when trying to login with AD credentials :


 

Cause

  • The authentication is not successful due to a permission issue.
  • Appropriate permissions have not been set up for AD users on the ESXi host.

Resolution

  • To provide user permissions on an ESXi 7.0/8.0 host, follow the below steps:

1. Access the ESXi Host Web Client

Open a web browser and enter the IP address or hostname of the ESXi host in the address bar.

Log in with the administrator credentials.


2. Navigate to 'Host' → 'Manage'

On the left pane, click on "Host" and then go to the "Manage" tab.


3. Go to 'Security & Users'

Under the "Manage" tab, select "Security & Users".


4. Select 'Users' Tab

Click on the "Users" tab to view the existing users.

5. Assign Permissions to the User

Navigate to the "Permissions" tab under the "Security & Users" section.

Click "Add Permissions".

Select the user from the "User" drop-down list.

In the "Assigned Role" drop-down list, select the role to be assigned to the user (e.g., Administrator, Read-Only).

Choose whether the permission should be assigned to the user or groups.

Click "OK" to save the changes.

6. Confirm User Permissions

Once the permission(s) are added, confirm the changes by reviewing the "Permissions" tab.
