Issue/Introduction

Network Pools (vMotion and vSAN pools) are not available on SDDC.

Network pools on the SDDC UI under the Network settings tab are missing, only DNS and NTP configuration settings are present :

Fetching the network pools through API doesn't provide any output :

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation on VxRail 4.x

Cause

It is an expected behavior of VCF on VxRail infra.

Resolution

  • The network pool is not applicable for VCF on VxRail deployments. Hence the Network pool tab is not shown.
  • In the case of pure VCF (not VxRail) infra, the network pool has the IP pool for vSAN and vMotion networks.
  • In the case of pure VCF (not VxRail) infra, network pool is associated with the cluster during host commissioning and is used during cluster creation and expansion for vSAN and vMotion VMKs.
  • In the case of VCF on VxRail, host commissioning or free pool is not applicable (VxRail has host discovery feature and the discovered hosts are added to the cluster).
  • For VxRail deployments, during cluster expansion, the first step of adding the host to the cluster is performed in vCenter (using VxRail plugin) which accepts vSAN/vMotion VMK IP address. Hence, the network pool is not applicable for VCF on VxRail deployments.
