Issue/Introduction

When modifying a VM setting (e.g. memory size, NIC settings, etc) Storage vMotion is triggered.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.4
VMware Cloud Director 10.5
VMware Cloud Director 10.6

Cause

The relocate tasks are triggered if the datastore of the VM reaches to the RED threshold.

There are following logs in vcloud-container-debug.log

  • Datastore group-pXXXXXX with free space XX,XXX GB has reached threshold limit of XX,XXX GB
  • Message[INFO]: Cannot use datastore cluster [vcId=XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX, moref=group-pXXXXXX] for subject [type:VIRTUAL_MACHINE, URI:XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX] because the container reached RED threshold of available capacity.

Resolution

VMware engineering is aware of this issue and is working to resolve it. The fix version will be provided here once available.

Workaround:

  • Check the datastores usage periodically not to reach the threshold.
  • Modify the threshold to a lower value if applicable.
