Shutdown/Startup order of the NSX-T environment for a maintenance window

Issue/Introduction

This article provides the order in which VMware NSX-T nodes should be powered off and on during a maintenance window or during a power outage.

Note: This article assumes that your physical network and SAN fabric are in working order and are not experiencing any other issues.

Environment

VMware NSX-T Data Center 3.x
VMware NSX 4.x

Resolution

Power Off Sequence

Note: Broadcom recommends to back up the NSX environment before initiating any planned power-off exercises. For more information, see the Backup and Restore section in the NSX Administration Guide.

  1. Shutdown all the workload virtual machines
  2. Shutdown the ESXi transport nodes
  3. Place the NSX Edge nodes into NSX Maintenance Mode
  4. Shutdown the NSX edge nodes
  5. Shutdown the NSX Manager node(Check the NSX manager attached to the VIP and power it off at the last) 
  6. Shutdown rest of the ESXi hosts hosting NSX Edge and NSX manager vms

Power On Sequence

  1. Power ON the ESXi hosts  
  2. Power ON all the NSX Manager one by one and ensure all services are up 
  3. Power ON the NSX Edge nodes
  4. Take the NSX Edge nodes out of NSX Maintenance Mode
  5. Power ON rest of the ESXi transport nodes
  6. Check the Connectivity of the Edge and ESXi transport nodes
  7. Power ON the workload Virtual machines
