Introduce process of generating vCenter backup file step by step.

It is required to have a backup server supporting one of these protocols: FTPS, HTTPS, SFTP,FTP,NFS,SMB or HTTP. It's also available to use sftp://<host-ip-address>/vmfs/volume/<Datastore>/<Folder> when SSH is enabled on the host.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.0

Resolution

  1. Open vCenter VAMI page as "https://<VC-FQDN>:5480".
  2. Login as root or any administrator user.
  3. Select "Backup" at left side bar, and click "BACKUP NOW" at right side.
  4. Enter "protocol://server-address<:port-number>/folder/subfolder" as where backup files would be saved. Fill in backup server "User name" and "Password" for access. Encryption password is optional to encrypt backup files. Select checkboxes for backup data. Click "Start" and backup task will start.
  5. Once it starts, it can be seen at Activity with its location, status, size and created time.
  6. Check backup files in backup server. The backup task generates a folder named "vCenter" and subfolders containing files of these:
