Issue/Introduction

While the host is booting, it may go partially through the boot process. Then it will PSOD and show the following message:

"The system has found a problem with your machine and cannot continue.

mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0: boot disk is not found or not responsive."

If you look for vmhba32 in the GUI, you can identify the type of storage device that it is connected to.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

The second line of the PSOD shows that there is a problem with the boot disk at mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0. This indicates an issue with the local boot disk on the host.

Resolution

  • In the vSphere client, select the host that is disconnected and go to the Configure tab. Under Storage, select Storage Devices. This will show the type of device as well as other information about the device.
  • Once you have verified that this is a local USB, SD, or internal drive, the hardware vendor should be contacted in order to resolve any issues with the physical drive.
