Issue/Introduction

  • While performing a Cross vCenter vMotion, you see the following error :

Environment

VMware vCenter Server
VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

This error is observed when a Cross vCenter vMotion is performed from source vCenter configured with DVS to destination vCenter configured only on standard switches.

Resolution

  1. Perform the below steps on the Destination vCenter/ESXi Hosts to configure DVS :

    1. Create a new DVS on the Destination vCenter with the same version as that of the source vCenter. Reference: Create a vSphere Distributed Switch
    2. Create new Portgroups on the newly created DVS with the appropriate VLAN ID's required for VM networking. Reference: Add a Distributed Port Group
    3. Add an uplink to the Destination vCenter's DVS while maintaining at least one other uplink on the Standard Switch to ensure the migration of ESXi Networking does not cause downtime.
    4. Migrate the ESXi Hosts networking from the Standard Switch to the newly configured DVS. Reference: Add Hosts to a vSphere Distributed Switch
    5. After the above configuration changes have been implemented, please perform the Cross vCenter vMotion again.
