Issue/Introduction

  • When performing an NSX-V to NSX-T migration using NSX Migration for VCD, an error 500 response occurs in the NSX migrator precheck logs:

    • 2024-07-09 15:59:15,765 [connectionpool]:[_make_request]:452[DEBUG] [redacted_system] |https://#####.example.url:443 "GET /api/query?type=vApp&page=2&pageSize=50&format=records&sortAsc=name HTTP/1.1" 500 None
  • The vcloud-container-debug.log displays the following exception:

    • java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Getting objects information for greater than 1000 is not handled. Input objects list should be less than 1000 in size.

Environment

  • VCD 10.x
  • TCP: 3, 4.x, 4.0.1, 5.x, 5.0. 5.0.1, 5.0.2

Cause

  • VCD enforces a constraint on the size of an object list being processed using maxBindLimit.
  • If the processed object list exceeds the default predefined limit of 1000, an exception is thrown.

Resolution

  1. Take a backup or snapshot of the primary and secondary VCD appliances before proceeding.

  2. Establish an SSH session to the primary VCD appliance.

  3. Check if the configuration properties have been set previously by running:

    /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin/cell-management-tool manage-config -n restapi.queryservice.maxBindLimit -l
    /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin/cell-management-tool manage-config -n restapi.queryservice.maxInClauseExpressions -l

  4. Increase the list limits by executing:

    /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin/cell-management-tool manage-config -n restapi.queryservice.maxBindLimit -v 2000
    /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin/cell-management-tool manage-config -n restapi.queryservice.maxInClauseExpressions -v 2000

  5. Re-run the commands from Step 3 to validate that the updated values were applied correctly.

  6. Execute the steps on standby appliances if necessary, then restart the VCD service on all cells

    service vmware-vcd restart
