VMware Aria Operations for Networks

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

VMware Aria Operations for Networks triggers the following alert when the counters of the physical adapters(vmnic) exceed a threshold value.

Alert: "vRNI-A threshold-crossing amount of receive-side packet drops have been detected on a host interface"

Environment

VMware vRealize Network Insight 6.x

VMware Aria Operations for Networks 6.x

Cause

The Aria Operations for Networks or vRealize Network insight alert includes the ESXi host details.

  • To validate the alert, login to the ssh session of the ESXi host and run the following command:

esxcli network nic stats get -n vmnicx

example: Receive packet drops could be seen on the stats of the physical adapter which could trigger this alert.

These receive errors could be caused because of multiple issues on the hardware end. For example: defective cable or sfp module, driver or firmware failures etc.

Resolution

These statistics are read from the hardware registers and indicate the frames dropped by hardware. "Receive packets dropped" error is a sum of all the receive errors observed on the physical adapter.

If any of the NICs show errors when running the command:

esxcli network nic stats get -n vmnicx

open a case with the hardware vendor to troubleshoot the physical NIC errors and follow these steps:
