Issue/Introduction

The SAS 3 cables between the server and the storage may be connected to the Expansion ports on Controller A and Controller B in the ME5 storage array.

Environment

New r640xl and ME5 storage array

Cause

The older Generation 8 configuration guide references only the rear view of the 2U192/ME4.  The ME5 SAS ports are in a different order than the graphic included. There are two controllers. The top is Controller A and the bottom is Controller B.  Controller B is upside down from Controller A.

Resolution

The ME5 has five SAS 3 ports on each of Controller A and Controller B.  The cables need to be plugged into A0 and B0 but may be accidentally plugged into the Expansion ports.

Reference the snapshot below.

Controller A on top has the SAS ports on the far left, A3-A0.  A0 is the fourth port from the left. The Expansion port, which will remain unused in most cases, is on the far right and the network management port is to the left of it. A0 is the recommended SAS port.

Controller B has the Expansion port on the left, network management to the right of that, and the correct B0 SAS port to the right of that, in the bank of four SAS ports, B0-B3.  We recommend using B0.

For future reference, the power supplies are on the far left and right.  The controllers and PSUs are all hot swappable, as well as the hard disks.
