Issue/Introduction

Growing a virtual machine disk, which resides on an NFS41 datastore, via VM edit settings in the vSphere Client, fails, with the error 'The capacity exceeds the maximum virtual disk size for the datastore'

In the datastore properties in the vSphere Client, the 'Maximum file size' parameter and 'Maximum virtual disk' parameters have a lower value than configured on the NFS server: The values may reflect the default values for the NFS server.'

Environment

  • vCenter – 7.0.3
  •  NFS41

Cause

The maximum file size is fetched from the NFS41 server only when the datastore is mounted. After mounting, changes made to maximum file size on the storage side are not detected, until the datastore is re-mounted.

Resolution

Remount of the NFS41 datastore is required to reflect the new value of max file size.
