Here are the list of processes that DX APM does:

Harvest is running every 15 seconds, gathering metrics and transactions from agents.  These go into a Spool file, which is closed and incremented every hour.  Every 24 hours, there is a 're-periodization': the spool files are aggregated and compacted and the aging policy is applied to metrics (3 different tiers) and traces.
