Issue/Introduction

  • In the below sample log message from Aria Ops for Logs, instead of nsx_mgr_name.example.com, the name field reports only the short-name, i.e. nsx_mgr_name:

    2024-07-23T09:51:17.379Z nsx_mgr_name systemd 1 - - Started System Logging Service.

  • In Aria Ops for Logs UI --> Click on the three lines at the top right corner --> Administration --> Management --> Hosts, we see the nodes listed with the short-name instead of FQDN.

Environment

VMware NSX 3.x
VMware NSX 4.x

Cause

During the deployment of the NSX Manager nodes, in the deployment wizard, under "Appliance Information", the short-name is provided as the "Name". This causes the node's /etc/hosts file to contain the entries (without the FQDN) as below:

root@nsx_mgr_name:~# cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.1.1       nsx_mgr_name

This will result in Aria Ops for Logs reporting the short-name.

Resolution

  • During the deployment of the NSX Manager nodes, under "Appliance Information", for the "Name" field, provide the FQDN.

  • In case the node (only the node that was deployed using the short-name will exhibit the problem) already is functional, modify the /etc/hosts file to contain the FQDN as below:

    root@nsx_mgr_name:~# cat /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1       localhost
    127.0.1.1       nsx_mgr_name.example.com  nsx_mgr_name
