Issue/Introduction

After upgrading to the Deployment Solution 8.7.2 release, the PXE boot server needed to be rebooted a couple times a day for PXE to work again.

Since the upgrade, it seems the PXE Boot keeps stopping ("Symantec Network Boot Service (TFTP)" service) as shown here:

NOTE: This issue could also occur on a GSS 3.3 RU11 or RU12 server but with the 'Altiris PXE MTFTP Server' service instead

Environment

Deployment Solution (DS) 8.7.1,  8.7.2

Ghost Solution Suite (GSS) 3.3 RU11, RU12

Cause

Known issue. An unexpected stop of the TFTP service was caused by improper handling of certain network errors in the environment.

Resolution

This issue was fixed in both Deployment Solution 8.7.3 and GSS 3.3.13.

An updated .exe is available depending on the product used as explained below:

For Deployment Solution

Try the updated SbsMtftp.exe attached to this article instead of the original SBSMTFTP.exe:

  • Open services.msc and stop 'Symantec Network Boot Service (TFTP)' service if it is running
  • Navigate to the following directory under the "...\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\SBS" folder on your PXE server
  • Rename 'SbsMtftp.exe' (like 'SbsMtftp.exe_original') or move it to a directory off of its current directory
  • Download 'SbsMtftp.exe' attached and place the .exe in the same location: "...\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\Deployment\SBS"
  • Open services.msc and restart 'Symantec Network Boot Service (TFTP)' service

For Ghost Solution Suite

Try the updated PxeMtftp.exe attached to this article instead of original PXEMTFTP.exe:

  • Open services.msc and stop 'Altiris PXE MTFTP Server' service if it is running
  • Navigate to the following directory on the Ghost Solution Suite PXE server: 'Program Files (x86)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\PXE'
  • Rename 'PxeMtftp.exe'  (like 'PxeMtftp.exe_original') or move it to a directory off of the eXpress share
  • Download 'PxeMtftp.exe' attached and place the .exe in the same location: 'Program Files (x86)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\PXE\PxeMtftp.exe'
  • Open services.msc and restart 'Altiris PXE MTFTP Server' service
