Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • Prior to the upgrade to vCenter Server 7.0, vCenter FQDN had been changed.

Example :

OLD FQDN = vcsa.myolddomain.local

NEW  FQDN = vcsa.mynewdomain.local

  • During upgrade prechecks, the following error is thrown :

"Error
Migration Assistant is not running on Update Manager host machine vcsa.myolddomain.local
Resolution
Update Manager installed on vcsa.myolddomain.local will be upgraded as part of the vCenter Server upgrade process
and will be migrated on the new vCenter Server Appliance. Run Migration Assistant on Update Manager host machine vcsa.myolddomain.local,
and keep the Migration Assistant window open until the (vCenter Server) migration process completes"

Environment

  • vCenter Server Appliance 6.7.x
  • vCenter Server Appliance 7.x

Resolution

Use the following workaround:

  • Take a snapshot of vCenter appliance

Note: When using multiple vCenters in the same Single Sign on Domain (Enhanced Linked Mode), there is high potential of corruption of the domain if no offline snapshots are taken of all nodes before the changes. Hence, please take offline snapshot of all vCenters in linked mode.

VMware vCenter in Enhanced Linked Mode pre-changes snapshot (online or offline) best practice : https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/313886

  • Note   VMware vSphere Update Manager Extension  version  from /etc/vmware/service-state/updatemgr/extension.xml

        Example : <version>6.7.0.42214</version>
