Issue/Introduction

Path redundancy to storage device has degraded.

The HBA frequently marked status down or may keep flapping the status.

Environment

VMware vSphere Esxi 7.x
VMware vSphere Esxi 8.x

Cause

In the /var/run/vmkernel.log and /var/run/vobd.log logs, you will notice the following entries:

YYYY-MM-DD qlnativefc: vmhbax(xx:0.0): qlnativefcStatusEntry:xxx:(x:x) Port down status: port-state=0x3 indicates port is down.

YYYY-MM-DD: [scsiCorrelator] [esx.problem.storage.redundancy.degraded] Path redundancy to storage device naa.xxxxxxxxx degraded. Path vmhbaX:CX:TX:LX is down. Affected datastores: "XXXXXX".

YYYY-MM-DD: [scsiCorrelator] [esx.problem.storage.redundancy.degraded] Path redundancy to storage device naa.xxxxxxxxx degraded. Path vmhbaX:CX:TX:LX is down. Affected datastores: "XXXXXX".

Resolution

  • Please engage the hardware vendor to investigate potential issues with vmhba.

  • Additionally, please check the following:
If multiple hosts are affected , try to correlate if its one side of fabric connectivity.
If a single host is reporting this then verify the the fabric cable and SFP or the switch port.
The switch statistics between the ESXi HBA and storage for any packet loss.
    Verify end-to-end connectivity.
    Verify all end port states.

  • Investigate any underlying performance issues.
