Issue/Introduction

When attempting to install Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) Linux Agent, the following error is displayed.

Symantec Endpoint Protection detected that Symantec Protection Engine is already installed on this computer.
Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Protection Engine cannot run on the same computer.
Uninstall both Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Protection Engine, and reinstall Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Environment

Linux environment with Symantec Protection Agent (SPE) already installed.

Cause

SPE and SEP Linux both use the same CAF module for communication.

There isn't any way right now to compartmentalize the CAF module for each product. The CAF module does not support it right now.

Therefore, the two products don't co-exist and may end up messing each other's communication mechanism, if they were to run together. In order to mitigate, the co-existence is not supported.

Resolution

This is by design.
