Issue/Introduction

  • Trying to create an on-premise to cloud replication all the replications for that particular on-premise site give the same error:

Failed to rename replication tracking VM 'id'. Operation canceled due to an unexpected error.

  • On the On-premise Replicator appliance in /opt/vmware/h4/replicator/replicator.log you can find entries similar to:

ERROR - [UI-<ui-id>] [pc-task-monitor-2] c.v.h.r.monitoring.JobTaskUpdateHandler : Task <taskid> has failed.
com.vmware.vim.binding.vmodl.fault.NotEnoughLicenses: License not available to perform the operation.

ERROR - [UI-<ui-id>] [pc-task-monitor-4] com.vmware.h4.jobengine.JobExecution     : Task <taskid> (WorkflowInfo{type='setupSource', resourceType='replication', resourceId='H4-<h4-id>.', isPrivate=false, resourceName='null'}) has failed
com.vmware.h4.api.error.exceptions.GenericServerException: Operation aborted due to an unexpected error.
        at com.vmware.h4.common.error.ExceptionConversionService.convert(ExceptionConversionService.java:62)

  • Onboarding a customer with an on-prem appliance fails with the error "unexpected error".

Environment

VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.7.x

Cause

This issue occurs because Cloud Director Availability relies on vSphere Replication technology to synchronize the source and destination virtual machines, which is not available for vSphere Essentials licenses.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, configure the underlying vSphere environments with a license that supports vSphere Replication features in all participating sites.

For more information on the vSphere Replication licensing requirements, see the vSphere Replication Licensing section of the vSphere Replication documentation.

Within the Cloud Director Availability see the vSphere product edition section for requirements.
