Issue/Introduction

The article covers how to get the console access for an Edge unit.

By default console access is denied in Orchestrator. Please allow console access on the Edge  Configure -> Firewall -> Edge Security

Environment

VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud

Resolution

Please find the steps below for console access

  1. Edge console access needs to be enabled on VCO under configure>firewall tab for the required edge and the edge needs to be rebooted after enabling console for this to take action
  2. In few models the console port is a mini-USB port that's usually covered by a small 1" plate on the back panel -  unscrew the plate to expose the mini-USB port.

    1. For edge 510/510 LTE:
Serial Console port location on the edge: back panel
      Driver:CP210x (https://www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads
Cable: Mini-USB to USB 3 cable

    2. For edge 520/540:
Serial Console port location on the edge: Side panel
      Driver:CP210x (https://www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads
Cable: Mini-USB to USB 3 cable

    3. For edge 6X0:
Serial Console port location on the edge: Back panel
      Driver: CP210x (https://www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads)
Cable: Mini-USB to USB 3 cable

    4. Edge710:
Serial console port location: Front panel

      Driver: PL2303 (https://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=225&pcid=41)

Cable: Mini-USB to USB 3 cable

    5. Edge840/Edge2000:
Serial console port location: There are 2 ports, VGA and USB on front panel. You need to connect VGA port to a desktop and USB port to a keyboard

    6. Edge3x00:

There are 2 ways to connect serial console.

      1. Serial console port location: RJ45 port next to status lights:
Driver: You will need PL2303 driver(https://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=225&pcid=41)
Cables: You need 2 cables. USB-to-DB9 adapter (e.g. Trendnet TU-S9), and DB-9 to RJ45 cable.  You stick the USB cable end into a laptop and connect the DB9 of the adapter to the DB9 of the console cable, and the RJ45 to the 3x00. Then use PuTTY for serial connection.
      2. Serial console port location: Micro USB port under USB3 ports.
Driver: You will need CP210x (https://www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads).
Cable: Micro USB to USB 3 cable. Connect Mirco USB port to Edge and USB 3 to laptop

  3. Once the cable is connected and  the drivers are in place, the edge will show up as a COMx device on Windows, and you can connect to it with a terminal emulator like PuTTY
  4. Once you are Connected via putty terminal make a note of the below settings:
  • 115200 baud rate
  • No parity
  • 8 data bits
  • 1 stop bit
  • No flow control

Once the above is done you should be able to see the login prompt and the TAC can login to the edge.
