VPXD randomly crashes with Memory exceeded limit

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • vCenter services crashed suddenly with application such as back up failing.
  • In the vpxd logs there are error with the signature - Current value 4046936 exceeds hard limit 4037632. Shutting down process.
  • vpxd can be manually started but will then go in "stopped state" after sometime.
  • vpxd core dump are sometimes found in the /var/core directory

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.0.x

Cause

This issue is caused by an application associated with the vCenter Server taking up too much memory/resources.

Resolution

  1. Check the environment for SRM or any monitoring tools.
  2. If either the SRM or monitoring tool are discovered to be the source pleas open the desire ticket to investigate further.
      1. If it is SRM, please open a ticket with the VMware vSphere Replication team.
      2. If it is the monitoring tool, please contact the tool vendor.
