Issue/Introduction

When importing environment configuration files (environment_roles.xml or environment_settings) via the Management Console or importexportutility, the operation may fail. This document identifies the steps to resolve failures caused by XML validation errors and server connection timeouts related to large file sizes.

Environment

Identity Manager 14.5

Cause

Import failures in this environment are generally caused by one of two issues:

  1. XML Schema Violation: The environment_roles.xml contains syntax or structure that violates the defined XML schema (e.g., unexpected characters in an element-only type).
  2. Connection Timeout: The file size exceeds the server's configured upload or write limits, resulting in a java.io.IOException: Error writing to server.

Resolution

Phase 1: Fix XML Schema Errors

  1. Review the error message to identify the specific XML element (e.g., imsscope:ScopeRule).
  2. Open the environment_roles.xml file in an XML editor.
  3. Validate the structure to ensure that all child elements are correctly nested and no forbidden text characters exist within element-only containers.
  4. Correct the syntax and save the file.

Phase 2: Resolve File Size Limitations

  1. If the upload hangs or results in an IOException, the file size exceeds the server's processing capacity.
  2. Divide the large environment_roles.xml file into several smaller XML files (e.g., by module or role type).
  3. Import the smaller files sequentially through the Management Console or importexportutility.
  4. If errors persist, verify server-side configuration limits for file uploads and adjust as necessary.
