Issue/Introduction

  • "VMware Aria Operations for Networks is running in Safe Mode" alert is seen in the GUI.
  • The Infrastructure status is Poor on the Infrastructure and Updates page in the GUI.
  • Refer to below screenshot from GUI showing the error message

Environment

Aria Operations for Networks 6.12.0
Aria Operations for Networks 6.12.1
Aria Operations for Networks 6.13.0
Aria Operations for Networks 6.14.0

Cause

If an object is being changed frequently and the number of such changes exceeds configured the threshold value (20 versions in the last 24 hours), then protection framework will be enabled and the alert "VMware vRealize Network Insight is running in Safe Mode" will be displayed on the system health page. This framework will skip some versions of the objects and keep the processing lag low by entering into safe mode.

Resolution

This alert means that VMware Aria Operations for Networks is being protected from high churn.

The system will come out of safe mode automatically after the object churn is reduced.

General Observations when this Alert is seen:

  1. When the projection framework is enabled, the noted alert will be displayed.
  2. This protection framework can lead to some lags but flows and reporting will function normally.
  3. No flow data will be lost.
  4. After the high churn is normalized, the safe mode alert should go away.
  5. The safe mode message may go away temporarily but it may also appear again. Whenever there is churn in the flow objects, the system will show the safe mode message.
  6. It can take up to 48 hours for the system to come out of safe mode automatically.

What to check on the deployed appliance(s)

  1. Validate services health for all platform and collector appliance(s) in the deployment.
  2. Execute the following commands for a simple deployment:

    ub
    ./check-service-health.sh -p -d

  3. Execute the following commands for a clustered deployment:

    ub
    ./run_all.sh sudo /home/ubuntu/check-service-health.sh -p -d

  4. Execute the following commands on the collector nodes individually:

    ub
    ./run_all.sh sudo /home/ubuntu/check-service-health.sh -p -d

Note: In the Output, All Services all Platform and collector appliance(s) should come up running and healthy.

  5. If this is the first occurrence of the safe mode alert, no action is needed.

Observe the VMware Aria Operations for Networks environment for the next 48 hours to validate that the alert has gone away.

If this alert continues to reoccur, contact Broadcom support. For more information, see Creating and managing Broadcom support cases.
