Issue/Introduction

Title: Edge cpu usage very high
Event ID: edge_health.edge_cpu_usage_very_high

Alarm Description:

  • Purpose: On an Edge half the CPU cores are assigned to datapath processes, and the other half are assigned to non-datapath service processes such as Load Balancing, GW FW etc ... For example a large Edge has 8 * vCPU's assigned to the VM, with cores 0 - 3 being assigned to the datapath and cores 4 - 7 to the services. This alarm is there to inform the user that the Edge CPU usage for non-datapath CPU cores has reached very high levels.
  • Impact: This alarm is a warning that the Edge is consuming CPU at near maximum capacity and the likelihood of seeing performance related issues is high for services that run on non-datapath CPU cores.

Environment

VMware NSX-T Datacenter
VMware NSX

Resolution

Steps to Resolve
For 3.0.0 and higher

Recommendation Action:

  • The user must review the configuration, running services and sizing of the Edge node. Adjust the Edge appliance form factor size, if possible, or rebalance services to other Edge nodes for the applicable workload.
  • Validate that there is not an excessive amount of firewall rule logging on the gateway firewall. As per the following KB it is expected that excessive FW rule logging can have an impact on CPU usage on the non-datapath CPUs:

Maintenance window required for remediation? No

Additional Information

If you need to file a Broadcom support request, be sure to note the Edge size and cpu usage (mpstat, top).
