Operations Manager

Issue/Introduction

In Ops Manager versions before 2.10.70 and 3.0.24, stemcells are sometimes incorrectly removed from the available stemcells list. Customers will see an error during Apply Changes "stemcell not found".

Cause

When upgrading Ops Manager, it tries to update all tiles, including the BOSH Director tile, to the latest stemcell. For example, during an upgrade, Ops Man may assign stemcell Jammy 1.351 to the Director tile even though that version of Ops Manager comes pre-packed with 1.340. As a consequence, the list of available stemcells may differ from what is expected or the options presented in the Stemcell Library.

Resolution

To prevent the "stemcell not found" error, one must check the list of available stemcells in the Diagnostic Report (diagnostic_report.json in the Support Bundle) and compare it with the options listed in the Stemcell Library and any stemcells known to be necessary for all the installed products.

Example:

  "available_stemcells": [
    {
      "filename": "bosh-vsphere-esxi-ubuntu-jammy-go_agent-1.406.tgz",
      "os": "ubuntu-jammy",
      "version": "1.406"
    }
  ],

If the option drop-down menu in the Stemcell Library also shows Jammy 1.423, then that stemcell must be uploaded. One can use either the Import Stemcell button in the Stemcell Library, or the "bosh upload-stemcell" command (https://bosh.io/docs/uploading-stemcells/). If the needed stemcell file is not available on your local system, then you will need to download it from the Tanzu Network (network.tanzu.vmware.com).
