Issue/Introduction

You wish to know if it is possible for multiple Symantec Protection Engine (SPE) consoles to share the same configuration file.

Environment

Protection Engine Console for Windows 9.x

Resolution

While the SPE console was designed to be installed on a central computer, it is possible to install the console on multiple computers and for those console to share the same configuration files by performing the following steps.

  1. From one of the console machines copy “C:\Program Files\Symantec\Scan Engine Console\CMaF\Settings” and its sub folders to a network location of your choice

  1. Share the “Settings” folder and make sure that the location is accessible from computers where the SPE console is going to be installed

    Example:   \\<ServerName>\Settings

  1. Install the SPE console on the first computer using either of the authentication modes (Basic/LDAP).  If the console is already installed on the computer then skip to step #6

  1. Launch the SPE console executable (Cmaf.UI.exe) from the install location (<install directory>\Scan Engine Console\CMaF) and provide valid credentials for login

  1. Remove/Rename the default "Settings" folder present at location-  <install directory>\Scan Engine Console\CMaF\

  1. Open the Windows registry editor and create a string value named as "SettingsDir" under the registry key- "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Cmaf\SPE\9.x\"

  1. Copy the UNC path to the shared "Settings" folder and set it as the value in "SettingsDir"

    Example:

  1. Export, to a .reg file, the following registry key - "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Cmaf\SPE\9.x"

  1. Install the SPE console on the another machine using the same authentication mode as used during the SPE console installation in the first computer

  1. Copy the "Config"registry exported at step 8 and import it on the second computer

  1. Launch SPE console on both the computer and start using the shared settings across the SPE console
  1. Since the original shortcut will no longer work, create a new shortcut that launches “C:\Program Files\Symantec\Scan Engine Console\CMaF\ Cmaf.UI.exe
