When trying to untar the client.tar file on an AIX box, several of the files fail with the error message: tar: 0511-188 Cannot create <filename>: Cannot open or remove a file containing a running program.

Issue/Introduction

Problem: 

When trying to untar the client.tar file on an AIX box, several of the files fail with the error message:

tar: 0511-188 Cannot create <filename>: Cannot open or remove a file containing a running program. 

 

Environment:  

SCM versions 12.5, 12.6 all components

AIX platform

 

Cause: 

On the AIX platform, sometimes links to files remain in memory even after the running program has ended.

 

Resolution:

You can choose either of these options to resolve the problem:

• Running the slibclean utility will resolve the problem but requires AIX administrator or root access. 
• Create a separate folder and move all the files returning the error message to the new folder. Then retry the tar command and it will work correctly.
