Introduction:
The purpose of this article is to provide information to help interpret the Moderate, Normal, and Critical status fields that appear on the view settings dialog for the "Top Cisco UCS Chassis Fan - State/Temperature/Speed (Table/Bar)" and the "Top Cisco UCS Chassis Power Supply - State/Temperature/Power (Table/Bar)" views
Question:
How do I interpret the Moderate, Normal, and Critical status fields that appear on the view settings dialog for the Cisco UCS fan and power supply?
Answer:
These two views both appear on the "Cisco UCS Chassis Overview" dashboard and the "Cisco UCS Overview" dashboard.
The views each display two bar charts, the "Time in Good State (%) - Average" and the "Fan Temp (c) - Average", for different Cisco UCS components.
The "Time in Good State (%) - Average" indicates the percentage of time the fan overall operating condition is "Good", meaning that the UCS system feels it is functioning within its design specifications.
It is expected that higher values are good (Green), i.e. that the fan is operating in a "Good" state the majority of the time.
The validation uses the following two values for its range:
Moderate Status Start
Normal Status Start
"Fan Temp (c) - Average" indicates the temperature in degrees Celsius.
It is expected that lower values are good (Green), i.e. higher values may indicate the components fan may not be functioning and an over-heating condition may be occurring.
The validation uses the following two values for its range:
Moderate Status Start
Critical Status Start
In the view settings there are currently three status fields, shared between the two bar charts:
Moderate Status Start
Normal Status Start
Critical Status Start
CA Technologies recommends the following be considered when setting these values.
"Moderate Status Start" and "Normal Status Start" should be used for the "Time in Good State (%) - Average" bar chart status values.
Only "Critical Status start" should be considered for the "Fan Temp (c) - Average" bar chart status value.
Component values below "Moderate Status Start" for "Time in Good State (%) - Average" would indicate a warning state, values above "Normal Status Start" would indicate a normal (Green) state.
When the temperature is above "Critical Status start", it would indicate a critical state and the bar chart would display a red bar for this component.
For example, to alert when "Time in Good State (%) - Average" is below 90% and "Fan Temp (c) - Average" is above 30 degrees Celsius, set the following values:
Moderate Status Start: 80
Normal Status Start: 90
Critical Status Start: 30
In order to save the view, "Moderate Status Start" must be less than "Normal Status Start" and "Critical Status Start" must be less than "Moderate Status Start".
In this example, the bar chart for "Time in Good State (%) - Average" will be red for values less than 80%, yellow for values between 80% and 90%, and green for values above 90%.
The bar chart for "Fan Temp (c) - Average" will be red for values above 30 degrees Celsius. It will be green for values below 30 degrees Celsius.
