Issue/Introduction

Question:

The CA XCOM for z/OS history file filled.  Is there some way I can be warned before the history file fills up?

Answer:

In order to prevent the history file (VSAM dataset) from filling up we recommend regularly running a LISTCAT and verifying that enough freespace remains to hold the anticipated number of new records that will be inserted into the dataset. This should be done regularly as a best practice.

XCOM cannot calculate this because there's no way to pre-determine if VSAM will be able to allocate additional extents at the time they are needed. Other datasets may consume available space on the candidate volumes, thus depleting the pool of space.
