Issue/Introduction

If the snmptd probe is configured to convert the matched trap to a Nimsoft alarm and the trap has PDU Variable Rules which do not have a Message text defined, the probe will generate an alarm with "The text message is empty" when the probe matches the incoming trap and the threshold defined in the PDU variable rule is breached.

Environment

  • Component: UIMSTD
  • snmptd probe

Cause

The default Message text will only be sent if the "Send Default message if no match" option is selected in the PDU Variable Rules" tab and none of the metrics defined in this same tab are breached.

Resolution

To define the Default message Text, select the trap that is to be monitored and select edit from the snmptd GUI.

Select Edit Trap then select the "Convert to Nimsoft Alarm" option and enter the Message text to be displayed if the trap is matched.

This is the message that will be displayed if the "Send Default message if no match" option is selected on the PDU Variable Rules tab and none of the metrics for the configured PDU variables are breached:

To generate alarms using the Default Message text, select the "Send Default message if no match" on the PDU Variable Rules tab:

Then for each PDU variable, select the variable and Edit it to provide the metric threshold rule and the Message text to use in the alarm when the threshold is breached:
