Best practice to modify default Content in vRealize Operations Manager 6.x

Issue/Introduction

This article provide the best practice to modify the default content in vRealize Operations Manager by cloning any default content and then modifying the cloned content.

Note: It is not recommended to modify any default content in vRealize Operations Manager 6.x, as these are subject to be overwritten during an upgrade.

This includes default Alert Definitions, Symptom Definitions, Recommendations, Policy Definitions, Views, Dashboards, Widgets and Reports.

VMware vRealize Operations Manager 6.3.x
VMware vRealize Operations Manager 6.1.x
VMware vRealize Operations Manager 6.4.x
VMware vRealize Operations Manager 6.0.x

VMware vRealize Operations Manager 6.5.x

Resolution

To clone default content:
  1. Navigate to the default content and select it.
  2. Click Clone.
  3. Make any desired modifications to the clone and click Save.

Example of cloning an Alert Definition in vRealize Operations Manager 6.5 and below:

  1. Log in to the vRealize Operations Manager UI as an administrator.
  2. Navigate to Content > Alert Definitions.
  3. Select the Alert Definition you want to clone and click Clone.
  4. Enter a meaningful name for the cloned Alert Definition.
  5. Make any desired modifications to the cloned Alert Definition and click Save.


Additional Information

Symptom Definition thresholds can be safely overwritten via a Policy change without the need of cloning.
 
To overwrite the thresholds:
  1. Log in to the vRealize Operations Manager UI as an administrator.
  2. Navigate to Administration > Policies > Policy Library.
  3. Select the custom Policy you want to change and click Edit.
  4. Skip to section 6. Alert / Symptom Definitions.
  5. In the Symptom Definitions pane, select the Symptom Definition you want to modify.
  6. Change the Condition to Override.
  7. Enter a new value for the threshold and click Apply.
  8. Click Save.
