"Failed to create service for hcmon driver" while installing vSphere Client

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Installing vSphere Client fails
• Installation wizard almost completes and then starts rolling back
• In the c:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Local Setting\Temp\vminst.log file, you see entries similar to:
  
  Failed to copy file: 0x00000002 'c:\windows\system32\drivers\hcmon.sys'
  Failed to create service for hcmon driver
  Service 'hcmon' already exists: 0x00000431

Note: In Windows 10 location is: C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Temp\vminst.log or type %temp% in run command

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs if you have installed the VMware USB driver.

 

This issue may also occur with the end point software that needs to be disabled or removed prior to installation.

Resolution

To resolve this issue follow the below steps:
Workaround 1:

• Make sure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 Service Pack 1 is installed.

Workaround 2: 

• Right click on the installer setup file for vSphere Client and click on "Run as administrator".

Workaround 3: 
Manually remove the hcmon.sys driver from your server.

Steps to manually remove the hcmon.sys driver from the server:

1. Right-click My Computer and click Manage.
2. Click Device Manager.
3. Click View > Show hidden devices.
4. Double-click Non-Plug and Play Drivers.
5. Right-click VMware hcmon and click Uninstall.
6. Rename the C:\windows\system32\drivers\hcmon.sys file to hcmon.sys.old.
7. Restart your computer and the re-try the installation.

Workaround 4: 

• It is recommended to disable any anti-virus and retry the installation.

Note: If you have Avast Antivirus, it may need to be uninstalled.  

Workaround 5:

• Remove/uninstall any old vSphere client version or VMware Remote Console installation.
