Resolution

Here is a summary of target use cases, solution architecture, solution components, and support information.

Use cases that are supported on VMware Cloud on AWS

Commvault Version 11, Service Pack 11 and later, provides the following features:
  • Backups and restores using vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP)
  • Changed block tracking (CBT)
  • Full, incremental, differential, and synthetic full backups
  • Restores of full virtual machines, VMDKs (alone or attaching to a virtual machine), and guest files and folders
  • VM conversion from VMware to Amazon
  • Hot-add is the ONLY transport mode supported

Use cases that are not supported on VMware Cloud on AWS

Because there is no access to hosts, the following Commvault features are not supported for VMware Cloud on AWS:
  • Live virtual machine recovery using vMotion
  • Live mount
  • Agentless file recovery
  • NBD and SAN transport modes

Solution Architecture

Solution Components

CS=Commserve: Coordinates all activity in CommCell environment.
MA=Media Agent: Conducts the movement of data from source to destination
VSA=Virtual Server agent: Provides complete data protection and recovery for virtual machine data in VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC 1.x and vSAN 6.x.

You can deploy Commvault to protect workloads running in VMware Cloud on AWS. The vCenter Server and hosts reside on high-performance servers in the AWS datacenter. For best results, use the Elastic Network interface (ENI) to backup data to AWS S3 libraries.

Note: It is mandatory to add vCenter Server using its public FQDN to the Commvault backup solution.
