Issue/Introduction

Change the status of VMware vCenter Server Appliance services.

 

Environment

7.x, 8.x

Resolution

List vCenter Server Appliance services:

Using the vSphere web client:

    1. Log into the vSphere Web Client with a vCenter Single Sign-on administrator account.
    2. Navigate to Administration > Deployment > System Configuration.
    3. Click Nodes, select the vCenter Server Appliance node and click the Related Objects tab.

Using the command-line:

  1. SSH as root or access console session
  2. Enable the shell
    shell.set --enabled true 
  3. Launch the shell
    shell 

    Note
    : To permanently configure the default Shell to BASH for root, see Toggling the vCenter Server Appliance default shell
  4. List the vCenter Server Appliance services:
    service-control --list 
  5. View the current status of the vCenter Server Appliance servicess:
    service-control --status

Stop, Start and Restart vCenter Appliance services

Using the vSphere Web Client:

  1. Log into the vSphere Web Client with a vCenter Single Sign-on administrator account.
  2. Navigate to Administration > Deployment > System Configuration.
  3. Click Nodes, select the vCenter Server Appliance node, and click the Related Objects tab.
  4. Right-click on the service you would like to start and select Start, Stop, or Restart.

Using the command-line:

  1. Start, stop, or restart a specific service using the following commands:
    service-control --start servicename 
    service-control --stop servicename
    service-control --restart servicename
  2. Start or stop all services using the following commands:
    service-control --start --all 
    service-control --stop --all

    Note: To restart all services, first stop then start all the services.
