Disabling the floppy drive in a Fusion virtual machine

Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to disable a floppy drive in a virtual machine.

Resolution

To disable the floppy drive in a Fusion virtual machine:

Fusion 4.x and above

  1. Navigate to Virtual Machine > Settings.
  2. Click Floppy Drive.
  3. Change the switch beside Enable Floppy Drive from ON to OFF.

Fusion 3.x and 2.x

  1. Go to Virtual Machine > Settings.
  2. Click Other Devices.
  3. Select the Floppy device from the column on the left.
  4. Deselect Connected.

Fusion 1.x

You must disable the floppy drive in the BIOS of the guest operating system.

To disable the floppy drive for a virtual machine:

  1. Quit VMware Fusion.
  2. In Mac Finder, browse to the Windows XP virtual machine bundle. The default virtual machine bundle location is ~/Documents/Virtual Machines .
  3. Right-click the Windows XP Professional virtual machine bundle and choose Show Package Contents.
  4. O pen the Windows Professional.vmx file in a text editor.
  5. Add the following entry in .vmx file:

    bios.forceSetupOnce = "TRUE"
     
  6. Save the file.
  7. Launch the Windows XP virtual machine. The virtual machine boots in to BIOS setup mode.
  8. Change the Legacy Diskette A: and Legacy Diskette B: status to Disabled by pressing + or -.
  9. Choose the Exit option from the top menu bar of the BIOS window.
  10. Click Exit Saving Changes. Click Yes. T he virtual machine restarts and the floppy drive is disabled.
