Powering on a virtual machine fails with the error: You have your IDE devices (disks/CD-ROM) configured into a state that will not work

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Cannot power on a virtual machine
• Powering on the virtual machine fails
• You see the error:
  
  You have your IDE devices (disks/CD-ROM) configured into a state that will not work -- you have an IDE slave with no master at ide0:1. While this works on some BIOSes and some real machines, it does not work correctly in a virtual machine. Please move your disk/CD-ROM to ide0:0 from ide0:1 in the configuration editor.
   
• The virtual machine is created with an IDE device (hard disk or CD-ROM) connected to its IDE bus slot 1 (ide0:1 or ide1:1) and no other IDE devices are connected to slot 0

Cause

Each IDE interface supports one primary and one secondary device. For an IDE device to work correctly on the VMware virtual platform, it must be configured at ide0:0 or ide1:0, so that there is a primary device on the interface. A single IDE device configured as secondary (ide0:1 or ide1:1) will not work.

This issue occurs if:

• You have added a device to the virtual machine and have selected an incorrect IDE slot.
• You have removed an IDE primary device from the virtual machine, while a secondary device continues to exist.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

 

1. Right-click the virtual machine experiencing the issue and click Edit Settings.
2. Select the CDROM Drive from the list.
3. In the Virtual Device Node dropdown, select the appropriate device.
