Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on the expected minimum performance by VDP appliance disk size.

Symptoms:
When configuring the VMware vSphere Data Protection (VDP) appliance and running the performance test, the result varies depending on the size of the appliance being deployed.

Environment

VMware vSphere Data Protection 6.0.x
VMware vSphere Data Protection 6.1.x
VMware vSphere Data Protection 5.8.x
VMware vSphere Data Protection 5.1.x
VMware vSphere Data Protection 5.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs because performance testing defines minimum expectations for Read, Write and Seek performance of the Storage.

Resolution

The minimum storage performance requirements:

VDP APPLIANCE SIZE
DISK SIZE
READ MINIMUM
WRITE MINIMUM
SEEK MINIMUM
0.5 TB
256 GB
60 MB/s
30 MB/s
400 SEEKS/s

The read, write and seek minimums must be met by your storage solution to avoid data loss.

For more information, see the Minimum Storage Performance section in the vSphere Data Protection Administration Guide for vSphere Data Protection 6.1 Guide.

Additional Information

Caution: VMware recommends to run the Performance Assessment Tool before using the VDP appliance. This is the last option in the wizard when initially setting up a VDP appliance. Select Run performance analysis on storage configuration. Alternatively, you can also select Restart the appliance if successful.

To start the Performance Analysis Tool from the VDP Configure UI:
  1. Connect to the VDP Configure UI:

    https://ip address of vdp appliance:8543/vdp-configure

  2. Log in with the root account.
  3. In the Storage tab, click Performance Analysis.
  4. Select one or more datastores.
  5. Click Run.

Notes:

  • This test performs write, read and seek performance test on the disks. Data on the disk can be lost during the write tests. It is best practice to only run this tool on newly-created disks that do not yet contain data.
  • Depending on your Storage configuration, performance analysis can take from 30 minutes to several hours to complete.
  • The performance analysis test is server-initiated, so you can close the browser while the test runs.
