  • Powering on a virtual machine fails
  • You see errors similar to:

    Device 66:0.0 not found
    Device 5:8.0 not found
    Device 3:0.0 not found
    Device 7:0.1 not found

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7

Cause

This issue occurs because the virtual machine is configured to pass through a host PCI device, but that device does not exist currently. The PCI device might have been removed from the mother board or cannot work.

Resolution

To work around this issue:

  1. Open the VMware Infrastructure (VI) Client.
  2. Select the ESXi host.
  3. Click Configuration > Advanced Settings > Refresh.
  4. Check if the device is still available. If not, remove the pass through setting from the virtual machine.
