Issue/Introduction

Although vCenter Server provides a mechanism to export and import customization specifications, it is likely that manual edits to such files do not provide the results one intends.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware ESX Server 3.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x
VMware VirtualCenter 2.5.x
VMware VirtualCenter 2.0.x

Resolution

Note: Customization specifications can be imported and exported from vCenter Server. However, template deployment with customization only supports those options that you can select via vCenter Server. Other additions are not guaranteed to be passed to the guest operating system and cannot be supported.
To export a customization specification:
  1. Right-click the specification you want to export, and choose Export. A Save As dialog box appears.
  2. Browse to the location to which you want to save the file, and click Save.
To import a customization specification:
  1. From the vSphere Client Home page, select Customization Specifications Manager.
  2. From the Customization Specification Manager, click Import.
  3. Select the file containing the Customization Specification that you want to import and click Open.

The imported specification appears in the Customization Specification Manager.
