Converting an encrypted virtual machine may fail

Issue/Introduction

• Cannot convert an encrypted virtual machine in Workstation
• Converting an encrypted virtual machine fails
• You see the error:
  
  Unable to determinate Guest Operating System.

Environment

VMware Workstation 8.x (Linux)
VMware Workstation 9.x (Linux)
VMware Workstation 7.x (Linux)
VMware Workstation 9.x (Windows)
VMware Workstation 8.x (Windows)
VMware Workstation 7.x (Windows)

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove encryption from the virtual machine before converting.

 

To remove encryption in Workstation:

1. Select VM > Settings > Options.
2. In the Options tab, select Encryption.
3. Under Encryption, select Remove Encryption.
4. Enter your password and click Remove Encryption.
