Importing media into VMware Update Manager fails with the error: Cannot upload file, because it is an invalid package

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Importing media into VMware Update Manager fails.
• Attempting to import an ESXi update image fail.
• You see these errors:
   
• • Cannot upload file, because it is an invalid package.
  • Failed to import data. The uploaded upgrade package cannot be used with VMware vSphere Update Manager
     
• In the C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Logs\vmware-vum-server-log4cpp.log file, you see entries similar to:

Environment

VMware vCenter Update Manager 7.0.x
VMware vCenter Update Manager 6.7.x
VMware Update Manager 7.0
VMware vCenter Update Manager 6.5.x

Cause

This occurs when you try to import an ESXi image from a vSphere Version which is different than the the Update Manager version, for example by trying to load an ESXi 6.5 installer image in Update Manager 6.7. Update Manager can only use ESXi images in the same version.

 

 

Resolution

To resolve this issue, VMware Update Manager should be upgraded. The minimum version required should match the version of the ESXi image you are trying to import.

For example, ESXi 6.7 upgrade image require VMware Update Manager 6.7 to install. This may also require vCenter Server and other components to be upgraded, Same applied to later versions.

Note: With Update Manager 6.5 you can upgrade hosts that are running ESXi 5.5 or ESXi 6.0 to ESXi 6.5. Host upgrades to ESXi 5.0, ESXi 5.1, ESXi 5.5, or ESXi 6.0 are not supported. ESXi images with these versions will not be accepted by Update Manager. Similar, Update Manager 6.7 will only accept ESXi 6.7 installer images and Update Manager 7.0 only ESXi 7.0 installer images
