Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Cannot register a virtual machine through the vSphere Client
  • Registering a virtual machine through the vSphere Client fails.
  • P2V can fail.
  • You see an error similar to:
    • Unable to access the virtual machine configuration: Invalid datastore path 'sanfs://vmfs_uuid:46e04d7a-649bf336-5f2d-001a4bbf00e2/DHCP/DHCP.vmx'.
    • Unable to access the virtual machine configuration: Invalid datastore path 'netfs://10.24.0.25//nnmbackup/nfstest/test/test.vmx'.

  • Registering a virtual machine in the vCenter Server datastore browser may fail when the .vmx file name contains non-Basic Latin characters, for example, westあ表薔薇/west-ja.vmx
  • You see the error:

Unable to access the virtual machine configuration: Invalid datastore path 'sanfs://vmfs_uuid:4665b1b4-4027e306-3b8b-001a4b5067cc/westあ表薔薇/west-ja.vmx'

Environment

Cause

This issue occurs if a datastore path violates the expected format.

The expected format is [dsName] path. For example, [storage1] folder/Vm1.vmdk.

This issue may also occur:
  • If a datastore corresponding to the given datastore path is not found.
  • If the file corresponding to the path does not exist on the filesystem.
  • When a media store and its NFS datastore have the same NFS path root.
  • When registering a virtual machine in the vCenter Server Datastore browser with the virtual machine path containing non-Basic Latin characters. For example, when the .vmx file name contains Japanese characters, such as westあ表薔薇/west-ja.vmx.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:
  • Verify that datastore mentioned in the error is connected and accessible.
  • Verify that the file exists in the datastore.
  • Ensure that the file name does not contain non-Basic Latin characters.
  • If this issue occurs when executing a vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM) recovery plan, perform two HBA rescans instead of one.
To perform two HBA rescans:
  1. Right-click Site Recovery in the vSphere Client navigation pane and click Advanced Settings.
  2. In the navigation pane of the Advanced Settings window, click SanProvider.
  3. Set the value in the SanProvider.hostRescanRepeatCount text box to 2.

If you experience this issue in other situations, file a Support Request with VMware Support.
