VMware vSphere Distributed Switch or Cisco Nexus 1000V limited to 4 concurrent vMotion migrations per host

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• A mixture of 1 Gb and 10 Gb NICs exist on a VMware vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) or Cisco Nexus 1000V.
• The number of concurrent vMotion migrations per host is limited to 4.
• 1 Gb uplinks exist for other port groups in the vDS.
• In verbose logging mode, the vpxd.log file (located at \ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs\) contains entries similar to:

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

vCenter Server allows up to 8 concurrent vMotion migrations per ESXi/ESX host (10 Gb per second on the network) in vSphere 5.x when both the source and destination hosts are fitted with 10 Gb NICs.

This issue occurs because regardless of the port group if 1Gb NICs are attached to the vDS, vCenter Server determines the maximum number of concurrent vMotion migrations based on the minimum of all link speeds (1 Gb). If the minimum link speed is 1 Gb, 4 concurrent vMotion migrations are allowed.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting vSphere 5.x. Currently, there is no resolution.

To work around the issue, remove the 1 Gb uplinks from all port groups of the vDS and ensure only 10 Gb NICs are attached.
