Installing VMware Tools in RHEL 6 using the Yum repository fails

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Installing VMware Tools in RHEL 6 using the Yum repository fails
• You see the error:
  
  Error: package: vmware-open-vm-tools-common-8.0.3-332073.el6.x86_64 (vmware-tools)
  Requires: vmware-open-vm-tools-kmod-8.0.3

Environment

VMware ESXi 3.5.x Embedded
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Embedded
VMware ESX Server 3.5.x
VMware ESXi 3.5.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware ESX 4.0.x

Resolution

The kmod RPMs for RHEL 6 are only included in the Yum repository for ESX/ESXi 4.1. They are not included in the Yum repository for ESX/ESXi 4.0 and lower.

To work around this issue for ESX/ESXi 4.0 and lower, perform one of these options:

• Install the vmware-tools using the Red Hat Package Manager. For more information, see Installing VMware Tools in a Linux Virtual machine using Red Hat Package Manager (RPPM) (1018392).
• Install the kmod RPM manually, then perform a Yum install of VMware Tools from Red Hat.
• Upgrade the ESX/ESXi host to 4.1
