Issue/Introduction

This message indicates that the ESXi host is using a ramdisk for logging. Since a ramdisk is volatile and does not persist through host downtime (such as reboots and shutdowns), this may limit the amount of troubleshooting information available if any issues are encountered.

Symptoms:

You may see these messages displayed on the console of the ESXi machine or within the logs:

  • Syslog is not configured for persistent storage.
  • Warning: Syslog not configured. Please check Syslog options under Configuration.Software.Advanced Settings in vSphere client.

Environment

VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Embedded
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1

Resolution

The ESXi host can be configured to place logs on a scratch location on disk, or redirect logs over the network to a remote host via syslog. For more information, see:

By default, ESXi 4.1 and higher attempts to use an available local scratch volume for persistent logging. All versions of ESXi can be configured to store logs on disk. For more information on how a scratch location is selected, or to configure a new scratch location, see Creating a persistent scratch location for ESXi (1033696) and Determining whether an ESXi host has persistent logging (2004773).
