Issue/Introduction

This article provides clarification on whether the NSX for vSphere 6.x (NSX-v) Edge appliance supports Storage vMotion.

Environment

VMware NSX for vSphere 6.4.x

Resolution

While Storage vMotion of NSX Edge devices is supported, there is some additional information to be aware of when considering Storage vMotion of NSX-v Edge appliances:

• When using VMware vRealize Automation (formerly known as vCloud Automation Center), it is important that you only migrate to storage configured for the reservation of your NSX Edge virtual machine.
• You can Storage vMotion an Edge, however any redeploy operation reverts it to its original datastore.
• There is an option of changing the Datastore within the Manage > Settings > Configuration > NSX Edge Appliances section which triggers an immediate redeploy.

Note: Redeploy is a disruptive operation unlike Storage vMotion.
