General questions

How is vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager supported?

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is a fully supported vCenter Server feature and VMware provides support for all Multi-Hypervisor Manager or vSphere related issues. For issues in the underlying third-party hypervisor platform (Microsoft Hyper-V, for example) VMware can only suggest workarounds or configuration changes, but actual issue resolution must be handled by the third-party hypervisor vendor. For example, issues with Hyper-V are handled by Microsoft Corporation.

What is vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager?

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is a component of VMware's Cloud Infrastructure Suite that deals with management of third-party host inventories.

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager enables heterogeneous hypervisor support in vCenter Server by enabling administrators to work with both ESXi/ESX and third-party hosts (for example, Hyper-V) and virtual machines from within the vSphere Client graphical user interface.

How does vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager work?

Administrators must install the Multi-Hypervisor Manager extension on their vCenter Server and the Multi-Hypervisor Manager client plug-in into the vSphere Client, which allows the addition of Hyper-V hosts to vCenter Server. When a Hyper-V host is added, its existing (third-party) virtual machines will be accessible from the vCenter Server UI.

How is vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager Licensed?

VMware vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is available to all vCenter Standard Edition customers as a free download.

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is not available with vCenter Essentials Editions.

What versions of vCenter Server does Multi-Hypervisor Manager work with?

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is compatible with vCenter Server 5.1.

How is vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager packaged?

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager server is available as a Windows installable package.

The vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager client is deployed from the integrated vSphere Client plug-in infrastructure.

Configuration questions

What is the upgrade process for vCenter Server with Multi-Hypervisor Manager in the mix?

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is a vCenter Server extension but functions as a separate component, so its upgrade process does not depend on vCenter Server upgrades.

What are the compatibility requirements for vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager?

The compatibility requirements for vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager are the same as those of vCenter Server.

What are the CPU, memory, and I/O requirements for a fully loaded vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager server?

VMware recommends that the deployment of vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is co-located with vCenter Server on the same machine. It requires 2+ GB of RAM on the vCenter Server virtual machine.

If deployed on a separate machine, the recommended hardware is:
  • 2 CPUs at 2 GHz
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • 1 GB of free HDD space
  • LAN

How many vCenter Servers can a vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager instance serve?

One.

What happens when the vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager server is unavailable?

When the vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is unavailable, the vCenter Server platform continues to function as expected without the third-party hypervisor management capabilities.

The third-party hypervisor layer continues to function normally and your workloads continue to run.

Is vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager available in High Availability mode?

Yes. VMware recommends deploying vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager in a virtual machine which can then benefit from all High Availability features.

What backup/recovery options are available for vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager?

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager stores its configuration data in a XML format in its local installation directory. Certificate data is stored in C:\ProgramData\VMware\. Any file based backup/recovery process can be used for backup.

How does vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager integrate with the vSphere Client (the C# client)?

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager integrates with the vSphere Client through a client plug-in.

Integration questions

How does vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager integrate with the vSphere Web Client?

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager does not currently integrate with the vSphere Web Client.

What are the key capabilities of vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager?
  • Provides integrated management of both native ESXi/ESX and third-party (Hyper-V) hosts.
  • Provides a hypervisor choice to the different business units in your organization to accommodate their specific needs.
  • Simplifies heterogeneous hypervisor management by using a single UI client.
  • Prevents single hypervisor vendor lock-in.

Does vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager replace the VMware vRealize Automation (formerly DynamicOps) product?

No. vRealize Automation (formerly known as vCloud Automation Center) focuses on managing multiple infrastructure pools at a higher level, while vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager focuses on multi-hypervisor support at the vCenter Server level.

vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager is a product for administrators which allows them to prepare and manage the underlying heterogeneous infrastructure, while vRealize Automation enables cloud consumers to use the infrastructure.

Do existing vSphere applications like Site Recovery Manager, vRealize Operations Manager (formerly known as vCenter Operations Manager), etc work with vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager?

While vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager offers the opportunity to existing applications to integrate with third-party hypervisors, there is currently no integration.

Security questions

How secure is the Multi-Hypervisor Manager?
  • The Multi-Hypervisor Manager supports HTTPS secured connections between all of its components:

    • vCenter Server
    • vSphere Client
    • Multi-Hypervisor Manager Server
    • HYPER-V Hosts

  • The Multi-Hypervisor Manager supports both self-signed and third-party-signed certificates:

    • Self-signed certificates must be accepted manually
    • Third party certificates are verified automatically by the third party authorities.

  • The Multi-Hypervisor Manager leverages industry standard vCenter Authorization and propagates it over the third-party inventory objects like Hyper-V hosts and virtual machines.

  • The Multi-Hypervisor Manager does not currently support SSO Authentication.
