  • Collecting the diagnostic log from a remote server fails.
  • You see the error:

Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

  • Connecting to the vCenter Server from a remote machine or locally using VMware vSphere Client fails with this error message:

    at System.Net.Sockets.NetworkStream.EndRead(IAsyncResult asyncResult)
    at VirtualInfrastructure.Utils.SecureBrowserProxy.ProcessRead(IAsyncResult result)
System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host...
    at System.Net.Sockets.NetworkStream.EndRead(IAsyncResult asyncResult)

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware VirtualCenter 2.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the log is generated if the transport stream between vCenter Server and the remote machine is interrupted.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, stop the IPsec service on vCenter Server and then generate the log bundle.
To stop the IPsec service:
  1. Click Start > Run,
  2. Enter services.msc.
  3. Click OK. The Services window opens.
  4. Right-click the IPSEC service and click Stop.

Note: This issue may also be caused by the firewall, anitvirus, or antispyware software installed on vCenter Server. VMware recommends you disable the services that may interrupt the transport stream between vCenter Server and the remote machine before collecting the diagnostic log.
