Issue/Introduction

This article provides an overview of Solution Licensing, which applies to vCenter management products such as Site Recovery Manager.

Symptoms:

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager 4.1.x

Resolution

In vSphere 5.0 and above, Solutions is listed as an assignable entity. That is, Solutions licenses are now available along with ESX and vCenter Server licenses.

Serial numbers for Solutions built on top of vCenter are able to be decoded. The Solution must upload a dormant license file to vCenter Server to have their serial numbers decoded.

To license a Solutions product:

1. Log in to the vSphere Client.
2. Click Home. In the Administration section, click Licensing.
3. Click Manage vSphere Licenses.
4. Enter the Solutions license key in the Add License Keys section, and optionally enter a Label for the new license key.
5. Click Add License Key, then click Next.
6. Click the Solutions tab.
7. Choose a license for the selected asset.
8. Click Next.
9. Click Finish.
