Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • You have recently migrated your host from ESX Classic to ESXi
  • In the /var/log/messages log file, you periodically see this message:
WARNING: Migrate: 456: Invalid message type for new connection: 542393671. Expecting message of type INIT (0).
  • No actual virtual machine migrations occur at the same time as the warning message

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded

Cause

This warning message is caused by a HP Systems Insight Manager(SIM) server that may have been originally configured to poll this host when it previously ran on ESX Classic with the HP Insight Manager agent running in the Service Console. This issue occurs because the host no longer runs this agent and the attempts by the HP SIM server to communicate with the missing agent fails.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove the reference to the ESXi host on the HP SIM server. For more information, see the HP SIM User Guide.
Note: The preceding link is correct as of October 26, 2016. If you find the link is broken, provide a feedback and VMware employee will update the link.
If you do not know the address of the HP SIM server (for example, when you have multiple servers), examine the logs just before the warning message and check for an entry similar to:
vmkernel: 6:06:54:50.639 cpu0:4874)MigrateNet: vm 4874: 1378: Accepted connection from x.x.x.x
In this entry, x.x.x.x indicates the IP address of the HP SIM server.
